SATURDAY: These Are the Days
Simi Valley Days festivities, held at various locations, will continue with the following events:
* Equestrian events are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Arroyo Simi Equestrian Center, 2900 Royal Ave. Riders from around the state are expected to compete in Western-style riding Saturday and English-style Sunday. Admission is free.
* Horseback riders will test their livestock-herding skills during a Team Penning event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the corner of Madera Road and Los Angeles Avenue. Admission is free.
* A new fund-raiser this year, the American Red Cross Car Rally, will commence at noon Sunday at the MICOM Building Complex, 4100 Los Angeles Ave. Sort of like a scavenger hunt, participants are given clues to proceed along a route to the finish line. Entrance fee: $25. To register, call 582-8630.
* The carnival will be open for business next Wednesday through Sept. 22 at the corner of Madera Road and Los Angeles Avenue. Hours: 5-10 p.m. Wednesday and Sept. 19, 5 p.m.-midnight Sept. 20, 11 a.m.-midnight Sept. 21, noon-10 p.m. Sept. 22. A $5 entrance fee to the festival grounds includes carnival, activities and entertainment.
Still to come: rodeo (Sept. 19-22), rodeo dance (Sept. 20), Simi Valley Days Parade (Sept. 21), Cow Chip Bingo (Sept. 21), 5K and 10K runs (Sept. 22), and grand finale festivities (Sept. 28). For more information, call 581-4280.

SATURDAY: Buddah’s Back in Town
Alan Mirikitani bases his style on the Kings--not the Los Angeles Kings, but B. B., Albert and Freddie. Thus, Mirikitani’s band, the Buddah Heads, will be serving up some seriously rockin’ blues when they take the stage at Nicholby’s in Ventura. All the way from Downey, the town that gave us the Blasters, the band is making its first local appearance in months.
Opening will be country and classic rockers Lone Wolf, featuring the powerhouse vocals of Rosilee. The venue is at the corner of Oak and Main streets in Ventura. Tickets are $6. Call 653-2320 to find out more about this 9 p.m. show.

SUNDAY: Fiesta Time
The music of Veracruz, eastern and central Mexico as well as other traditional genres will highlight the 30th Annual Ojai Valley Mexican Fiesta & Mariachi Music Festival at Libbey Bowl. Sponsored by the Ojai Valley Mexican Fiesta Committee, the festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The daylong bill will feature 11 performance troupes from around Southern California, including Mariachi UCLA, Mariachi Los Coyotes, Mariachi Jalisco and Conjunto Macuixochitl. Also performing, Los Ninos de Ojai Dancers and Ballet Folklorico Infantil.
An array of traditional foods will be cooked on site and children can take part in special activities. Libbey Bowl is at Ojai Avenue and Montgomery Street in Ojai. Tickets: $6, $5 senior citizens and students, $2.50 for children 6-12, under 6 free. For more information, call 646-2900.

UP THE COAST
* The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is sponsoring a daylong tour of several private water gardens in the Santa Barbara area Saturday. The tour highlight will be a stop at the unique Lotusland, a botanical wonderland of 23 landscaped acres on a 37-acre estate nestled in a residential section of Montecito. Participants will board a bus at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, and the tour will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A box lunch is included. Space is limited and reservations are required. * The California Beach Party will be held Sept. 21 and 22 along the beachfront Promenade near the Ventura Pier. The festival will include performances by Dick Dale & the Daletones, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and others. There will also be a Longboard Surfing Championship. Call 654-7830.
