Kansas’ Vaughn Will Miss Part of Season

Kansas guard Jacque Vaughn, who had decided to return to the Jayhawks for his senior season rather than make himself available for the NBA draft, will probably not play until January after suffering a wrist injury in a pickup game Tuesday night.

Vaughn tore ligaments in his shooting wrist and surgery will be required.

Former USC and pro basketball player Mack Calvin has been named coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills. He replaces Dave Yanai, who left the school after 19 years to accept the head coaching job at Cal State L.A. in July.

An NCAA committee said that any school that hires former Baylor coach Darrel Johnson after April 15, 1997, will not have to appear before the Committee on Infractions to determine if his athletically related duties should be limited. Previously, the restriction lasted until April 15, 1999.

Johnson was fired by Baylor and later acquitted of federal fraud charges stemming from an academic scandal that occurred during his tenure. But three of his assistants were convicted after being accused of rigging test scores from correspondence-course exams.

Roscoe Pondexter, an outstanding high school athlete in Fresno who went on to star at Long Beach State in the early 1970s, was recently hired by Fresno State to serve as a mentor for student athletes. But, according to the Fresno Bee, on Aug. 12 Pondexter was fired as a guard at a state prison in Corcoran. Pondexter was accused of dragging an inmate from his cell and beating him, helping another guard attack an inmate, and assaulting another guard during an officers’ basketball game against guards from another state prison in Avenal, state records show. Fresno State did not comment on his status.

Tennis

Gigi Fernandez, the second-ranked doubles player in the world who teamed with Natasha Zvereva to win the U.S. Open doubles last week, was left off the U.S. Fed Cup team by captain Billie Jean King.

King said she had a falling-out with Fernandez in the Fed Cup semifinals in July. While declining to elaborate, King said, “Gigi was asked to leave the team in Japan.”

Named to the team were Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Mary Joe Fernandez and Linda Wild. They will face Spain in the Fed Cup finals Sept. 28-29 in Atlantic City, N.J.

World junior champion Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina rallied from 3-0 down in the final set to beat second-seeded Felix Mantilla of Spain, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at the Bournemouth International clay-court tournament in England.

Top-seeded Barbara Paulus of Austria defeated Bulgaria’s Katarina Maleeva, 6-4, 6-3, in a first-round match of the women’s Czech Open at Prague.

At the USTA National Men’s Grass Court championships at Lawrence, N.Y., Gordon Davis of Encino, Bob Duesler of Newport Beach and Jim Nelson, also of Newport Beach, were among the winners in the 60 singles. . . . Neil Levinson of Santa Monica reached the quarterfinals of the men’s 35 grass-court championships at Southampton, N.Y.

Golf

Former champion O. Gordon Brewer and 1996 British Senior Open Amateur winner Joel Hirsch advanced to the semifinals of the USGA Senior Amateur at Williamstown, Mass. Brewer beat Bob Brogan of Woodland Hills, 4 and 3. . . . Susan Rennie of Venice shot a 1-over-par 73 to take the first-round lead of the Senior Women’s Amateur at Seattle.

The Lakers signed rookie free-agent forward Juaquin Hawkins, who played at Long Beach State.

The Dallas Burn won a shootout in San Jose to defeat the Clash, 3-2, in Major League Soccer.

John Vargas, Corona del Mar High water polo coach, has been named men’s national team coach and will guide the U.S. team at the 2000 Olympics at Sydney, Australia.

Agent Leigh Steinberg, arrested on suspicion of drunk driving over the weekend, issued an apology Wednesday, saying “role models have to address their failures as well as their achievements.”
