FCC OKs Satellite: General Motors Corp.’s Hughes Electronics Corp. and General Electric Co. on Thursday got from the Federal Communications Comission the airwaves they need to deliver video services to Latin America by satellite. Plans for Hughes’ Galaxy VIII(I) project and GE’s GE Americom project depended on FCC permission for the companies to use a swath of airwaves to let their Earth stations communicate with satellites in space. FCC commissioners voted unanimously for the allocation Thursday. The spectrum will let the companies transmit video, phone calls and other data from Earth stations to satellites, and then to customers in Latin America.
