Edison’s Defense Proves Too Strong for Paramount

Vince Catani scored three touchdowns to lead Edison to a 28-13 victory over host Paramount in a nonleague football game Friday night.

Catani, who carried 21 times for 107 yards, scored on runs of one, four and one yards, one in each of the first three quarters. He also caught two passes for 26 yards.

The Edison defense, featuring seven junior starters, passed its initial test impressively.

“They played extremely well except for one play,” Coach Dave White said.

The breakdown came on a 74-yard touchdown run by Danny McMullen to start the second half and reduce the Edison lead to 14-6.

The Chargers came back with a 68-yard scoring drive, giving them a more comfortable lead.

The Edison defense held Paramount to 30 yards in the first half. Andy Lambert recovered a fumble on the Paramount 15 to set up the first touchdown and caused a fumble in the second quarter that was recovered by Mike Buckingham.

Edison put the game away in the fourth quarter when receiver Aaron Mass pulled the ball away from defender Philip Palazzolo and turned it into a 31-yard touchdown reception.

McMullen scored on a two-yard touchdown with 4 minutes 21 seconds left in the game for Paramount’s final points.

Jeff Grady completed 10 of 19 passes for 138 yards for the Chargers.
