Weekend Fest Marks Mexican Independence

A celebration of Mexico’s independence from Spain concluded Sunday with a classic car show, mariachi music and a performance by the Nahui Ollin Danza Azteca dance group on the old Oxnard High School football field.

Sponsored in part by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Fiesta Patrias was a two-day party to mark Mexico’s breaking away from the Spaniards on Sept. 16, 1810.

The event featured food and crafts booths and a fun zone for children.

For many, the focal point of the event was a display of about a dozen cars restored by members of Los Viejitos car club.

And if the rhythms emanating from the cars’ sound systems weren’t enough to lift the spirits of fiesta-goers, the Danza Azteca drummers did just that for many of the hundreds of people who attended the weekend celebration.
