Post-Merger Layoffs Drop Sharply: Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. said job cuts attributed to mergers totaled 6,083 from May through August, down 84% from 37,381 in the corresponding four months of 1995 and down 71% from 21,192 in the first four months of 1996. The Chicago-based outplacement consulting firm said layoffs from mergers constituted just 5% of job cuts in the second four months of 1996, compared with 8% in the first four months of 1996.
