FTC Files Complaint Over Exxon Gas Claims: The Federal Trade Commission accused Exxon Corp. of misleading consumers by claiming that switching to its gasolines, particularly Exxon 93 Supreme, would make engines cleaner and significantly reduce maintenance costs. The FTC said Exxon has failed to substantiate those claims, made in television and radio ads. Exxon had no immediate comment on the complaint. If an administrative law judge upholds the FTC complaint, Exxon could be required to have scientific support for future claims about its gasolines’ benefits, the FTC said. The case is the latest in a series of complaints challenging advertising claims for high-octane gasoline. Amoco Corp., Sun Co. and Unocal Corp. have previously settled similar FTC allegations, the FTC said.
