Apple, Sun Microsystems Join Forces: Cupertino-based Apple, once eyed as a takeover target by Sun, plans to work with Sun to make the companies’ computers and Internet software more compatible. Apple Computer Inc. will make the Mountain View-based company’s new Java programming technology work with Apple’s Internet video technology, QuickTime and other Apple multimedia technology, the companies said. The alliance is a bid to stave off Microsoft Corp., which dominates the operating system market. Apple hopes Java will enable it to better compete with Microsoft, which also uses Java. Apple’s shares gained 50 cents to close at $23.50 each. Sun’s shares rose $2.50 to $61. Both trade on Nasdaq.
