From Times Wire Reports

At least 18 people were killed in two days of clashes between mine workers fighting with sticks, knives and explosives, police said. The fighting, apparently sparked by ethnic rivalry between Pondo and Sotho workers, erupted at the Buffelsfontein gold mine northwest of Johannesburg on Sunday. Before the latest violence, at least 30 workers were killed in two months of ethnic clashes at four other mines run by Gold Fields of South Africa Ltd., prompting President Nelson Mandela to appoint a judicial commission of inquiry.
