Differing with her father on the abortion issue, Robin Dole said Monday she believes that the matter “belongs outside of politics” and should be “a very personal, individual decision.”

GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole supports a constitutional amendment to outlaw abortion, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.

“It’s a terrible choice for any child or any woman to ever have to make,” Robin Dole said. “But I think it belongs outside of politics. . . . It’s a very personal, individual decision.”

In an interview after helping open a state GOP office, she rejected the “pro-choice” label and said she could not have an abortion “for pro-life reasons. But I really think it belongs outside of politics.”

Dole campaign spokesman Nelson Warfield had no immediate comment on her remarks. The GOP platform calls for a constitutional amendment banning abortion; an appendix added with the Republican nominee’s support suggests tolerance for those with differing views.
