Attention rosarians and garden enthusiasts: The Stagecoach Inn Museum in Newbury Park will host the Ventura County Rose Society’s “1996 Rose Show” from 1 to 4 p.m.
Here is an event for the pros and those without a green thumb. Experts from around Southern California will display a wide selection of their fall blooms, including hybrid tea roses, miniatures and shrub roses.
Neophytes can join in the show, too--and need not be bashful, said society President Clay Jennings. “We’re all friendly. It’s not like a dog show,” Jennings said. “You won’t have to walk your rose around a ring.” If you’d like to enter your little darlings, just show up for registration between 7 and 9:45 a.m. Note: Free novice classes will be offered for the less-experienced exhibitor. Everybody is invited out to peruse the judged exhibition and the museum’s rose garden, which is just beginning its fall bloom. Maybe you’re having problems with your own rose garden? American Rose Society consultants will be present throughout the day to answer questions on rose cultivation.
Admission to the museum is $2, $1 senior citizens and children. The rose show is free. The museum is at 51 Ventu Park Road. For more information, call 482-2066 or 498-9441.

Music of Mexico
Mexihcayotl Society for the Arts and Humanities will celebrate Mexican musical traditions, featuring an impressive lineup of six performance troupes, during its annual concert at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.
Billed as “Mexico Musical,” the 7:30 p.m. concert will include performances by local and Mexico-based groups. Oxnard’s own acclaimed Conjunto Hueyapan, a Veracruz ensemble and 16-year-old singing sensation Ixya Herrera will be joined by Grupo Tradicion Mexicana, Mariachi Tlaquepaque, Conjunto Erandi, plus Zeferino Nandayapa & Enrique Ulloa, a marimba-and-flute duo.

Sounds Familiar
It’ll be flashback time at the Ventura Theatre when two bands with a ton of soul and even more hits, Tower of Power and the Average White Band, crank out a few decades of songs.
Tower of Power, with one of the most famous horn sections anywhere, formed in Oakland in 1968 and has seen a multitude of rock ‘n’ roll fads come and go as they have continued to stage their stylish brand of soul, R & B and rock. Plus, the group may be the only rock band that features a fluegelhorn duet. The Average White Band, not exactly new kids on the block, formed in Scotland in the early ‘70s. The group is known for such hits as “Pick Up the Pieces” and “Cut the Cake.”

UP THE COAST
The Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera on Friday will open its 12th season with the story of Don Lockwood, a 1920s silent movie star struggling to make it in Hollywood’s newfangled talking pictures. Yup, its “Singin’ in the Rain,” based on the original MGM movie written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Show times: 8 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays, 3 p.m. Oct. 2. The production, complete with faux rain, will continue through Oct. 20. Tickets: $15-$38.
