McDougal Wins Delay of Prison Date

LITTLE ROCK — Susan McDougal doesn’t have to go to prison on Monday, after all.
President Clinton’s former business partner was to begin serving a two-year prison term for misusing a $300,000 loan she received in 1986. But the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday put off McDougal’s reporting date pending her appeal of a contempt of court citation, which could bring her up to 18 months of additional prison time.
She was cited after refusing to answer questions before a federal grand jury investigating the Whitewater partnership, including whether Clinton told the truth in testimony denying knowledge of the fraudulent $300,000 loan. McDougal said she refused to talk because she didn’t trust Whitewater prosecutors.
Prosecutors must respond by Oct. 7 to her request for a rehearing over the contempt issue.
