Prop. 209 Support

What’s wrong with this picture: According to the latest polls, 60% of Californians say they’ll vote yes for Prop. 209, which would prohibit affirmative action, yet a majority of them also say they support affirmative action programs for minorities and women (Sept. 19).

Have we fallen into election-year delirium and feel like passing more legislation without knowing what we’re voting for? Or have backers of Prop. 209 like the governor and Ward Connerly succeeded in deceiving people into thinking that Prop. 209 promotes equal opportunity, when in fact it completely jeopardizes all that the civil rights movement fought for?

Our society has not progressed beyond discrimination. So why should we think we’ve progressed beyond needing affirmative action?
