Surgeon Says Yeltsin Ignored Heart Advice

President Boris N. Yeltsin’s heart surgeon said the Russian leader worsened his heart condition by ignoring medical advice and subjecting himself to “inhuman” levels of stress. Dr. Renat Akchurin, speaking on Russian TV, confirmed that Yeltsin’s heart was in such poor shape in August after months of an exhausting reelection campaign that doctors had serious doubts whether an operation, now delayed until mid- or late fall, was possible.
