Judge to Discuss Juvenile Crime
The Valley Jewish Business Leaders Assn. will host a discussion with Superior Court Judge Morton Rochman about the problems the juvenile court system is facing and possible solutions to this type of crime.
The judge’s speech will be held during an association breakfast, 7:30 to 9 a.m. Thursday at the Warner Center Marriott, 21850 Oxnard St.
Rochman said he will give the audience an overview of the juvenile court process, a general lesson in the Los Angeles County juvenile court system and finally a view of what happens in the Sylmar Juvenile Court, where he has presided for 10 years.
He said the main problems he has seen have dealt with gangs and truancy, probation officers who must work with little funding and other issues stemming from “the melting pot population that crosses all kinds of socioeconomic lines,” he said.
“We need to try to get more community involvement with these agencies, and we have to find more funding, which is the biggest problem facing the juvenile court system today,” Rochman said.
