1994 Ridge Vineyards Zinfandel “Lytton Springs” ($19.99).

This is a kinder, gentler Zinfandel from the fabled Lytton Springs vineyard in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley and one of California’s premier Zinfandel specialists. The impression in the mouth is of gorgeous ripe blackberries and black cherries, without any of the jamminess that makes some Zinfandels so cloying. In the background is a touch of new oak. The tannins are there too, but they’re soft, just enough to give some definition to the fruit. Elegant and beautifully structured, the wine leaves an impression of grace.

Drink it with grilled meats, pork chops, ribs. It’s versatile enough to go with a few slices of salami, pasta and all the way to the cheese course.
