Madonna With Child: From Prada Girl to Poncho Mom

Madonna has finally had to hang up her Pradas and face the horrors of maternity clothes.

“I can’t wear any designer clothes,” she told Vogue. “Ponchos are good right now. You get a tablecloth, you cut a hole in the middle for your head. That’s all I’m going to be able to wear.”

That, and the favorite uniform of mothers-to-be everywhere: sweats.

Worse, once the baby arrives later this month, she’ll have just a few months to shave down for the December premiere of the Alan Parker feature “Evita,” in which the 38-year-old singer-actress has the title role--and the costume changes to prove it.

Bloomingdale’s, the New York retailer with stores due soon in Southern California, has in the works a line of clothing--suits, costume jewelry and such--inspired by the musical, which is set in 1940s Argentina.

Madonna said the challenge of playing such a complex and historically important figure as Eva Peron has not proved to be quite as frightening as preparing for motherhood. But she says she’s up for a lifestyle overhaul.

“I’m sure having a child will bring a sense of peace, fill out my life in other ways that I couldn’t possibly fill out with just my career or living in a very selfish way,” she said.
