The Riordan Foundation has designated John F. Kennedy High School “A Safe Place to Play.” The designation came with a $2,000 grant.

Children ages 3 to 5, come to Kennedy’s Careers With Children program three mornings a week. Kennedy students help run the program, which started when the school opened in 1971, to hone parenting techniques and explore careers in the field.

“We are extremely pleased to be awarded this grant because it will enable us to purchase and replace sorely needed equipment,” said program director Karen Brualdi.

“This grant means we will be able to purchase exciting new toys that inspire creativity, socialization and active yard play for our children.”

Parents of the 21 participating children pay $5 per child, per week, Brualdi said. Those fees allow the program to operate without school funding.

“Most of the children come from the area, and we--thanks to word-of-mouth advertising--have always had a waiting list,” Brualdi said.
