Alpha Microsystems, a computer hardware and software company, said it lost $652,000, or 6 cents a share, for its fiscal 1997 second quarter, contrasted with net income of $42,000, or 1 cent a share, for the second quarter of the previous year. Sales for the period ended Aug. 25 declined 29% to $6.1 million from $8.6 million.

The second-quarter results include losses of approximately $525,000 from the downsizing of the company’s AlphaHealthCare subsidiary and operations of the company’s subsidiary in Great Britain, which was sold on Aug. 10. For its fiscal 1997 first half, Alpha Microsystems reported a net loss of $996,000, or 11 cents a share, contrasted with profit of $93,000, or 1 cent a share, for the previous year’s first half. Sales of $13.2 million were down 23% from $17.2 million.
