SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The City Council Tuesday will discuss modifications proposed to the plan for the Creekside Park Community-Senior Center project, which is to be used for the city’s senior lunch program, classes, seminars, games and other activities.

As proposed now, the $500,000 project would include a 1,500-square-foot main activities facility and two adjoining 800-square-foot modular buildings, as well as landscaping.

In July 1995, when the council first gave conceptual approval, Phase 1 of the project called for the main building and only one modular unit, said Mort August, Dana Point’s public works director.

But in the past six months, participation in senior programs has expanded greatly, causing the immediate need for more room and the second modular building, officials said.

By adding the second modular unit, the majority of senior citizens programs could be moved from Del Obispo Community Center, where they are held now, to one central location at the Creekside site.

“We always envisioned that a second modular would needed at a later date,” August said. “The need we saw in the future has come a lot sooner.”

The Planning Commission last month gave permission for construction to begin on three acres of city-owned land near Stonehill Drive and San Juan Creek. Pending council approval, construction of the first phase of the center would begin by year’s end, August said.

Tuesday’s meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers, 33282 Golden Lantern, Suite 210.
