ON THE NET

* According to the American Internet User Survey (https://etrg.findsvp.com/features /newinet.html), 8.4 million adults and 1.1 million children under the age of 18 tap into the Internet--almost as many as have subscriptions to commercial online services. Communication is the most popular use for the global computer network, followed by information gathering.

* The Recontact study, released last spring by Nielsen Media Research and the industry association known as CommerceNet, shows that as the Internet population grows, it more closely resembles America at large. The average Netizen is now more likely to be older, female, not a computer professional and going online for commercial--not academic--reasons.
