The Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to spend $3.5 million to buy industrial land near Mar Vista to build a recycling drop-off center and parking lot for city trucks.

The five acres at 6000 W. Jefferson Blvd. are owned by Chevron USA.

Once purchased, the land will be used to park 75 city trucks that collect recyclable material from residences. The trucks now are kept at another city lot that will be used for a maintenance facility.

The city also plans to build a recycling drop-off station where residents can take recyclable material, bulky items and yard trimmings.
