Only two of the seven candidates for City Council favor a proposed daytime curfew for school-age children. Brian Sunley and Anna Piercy said at a forum this week they think such a curfew has merit. But the other five candidates--Steve Blount, Christen Marie Fouty, Leo Friedland, Tim Keenan and Michael McGill--said they oppose the idea.
At issue is a proposal that would allow police to give citations to juveniles and their parents if the youngsters are found out of school without an excuse.
“I do think we need something to help with those [truant] kids out there lollygagging and roaming around,” Piercy said at a Thursday night forum sponsored by the Cypress Chamber of Commerce.
The other five candidates, however, said a daytime curfew is not needed, and several added that truancy is a school problem, not a police matter.
