Alan Downes; Filmed Vietnam Napalm Victim

Alan Downes, 58, who along with still photographer Nick Ut captured the memorable scene of a screaming, naked girl fleeing a napalm attack in South Vietnam. Downes filmed for television 9-year-old Kim Phuc running with her clothes burned off. His film and the still photograph by Ut of Associated Press were used by media around the world, and Ut won a Pulitzer Prize. Downes and Ut saved the severely burned child’s life by getting her quickly to a hospital. Downes, who became chief cameraman for Britain’s Independent Television News, won several awards for his coverage of Vietnam, Eritrea and the Turkish invasion of northern Cyprus.
