Experts say that before children are left home alone, they must know the following:

* Their full name, address (including city and state) and telephone number with area code.

* How to call local emergency numbers (besides 911) for fire, police, hospitals and doctors.

* How to make long-distance calls or reach an operator.

* How to work locks, bars or alarm systems on windows and doors.

* What to do if someone breaks in.

* How to use a fire extinguisher.

* Basic first aid.

* The safest and quickest route out of the house in case of fire.

* The safest route home from school and to avoid walking alone.

* Never to go anywhere with an unauthorized person, even if it is someone they have met.

* That a stranger is someone neither you nor your children know well.

* Never to go into your home if a door is open or a window is broken.

* Rules for answering doors and telephones, cooking and dealing with siblings.

* How to contact a parent, neighbor or relative within driving distance once they arrive at home.
