Ventura County fire officials have scheduled a 1,200-acre controlled burn for the Aliso Canyon area north of Ventura on Wednesday.

Firefighters will use the exercise to both sharpen their techniques as well as clear the brush in the area above Victoria Avenue and Foothill Road.

Ten separate agencies will participate in the burn, including firefighters from Oxnard, Ventura, Santa Barbara, the California Department of Forestry, National Park Service and Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

“The current weather pattern should loft the smoke above populated areas and out to sea,” Fire Department spokeswoman Sandi Wells said in a prepared statement.

“Some smoke may be present in canyon areas near the burn, but the amount is not expected to be substantial,” Wells said.

The burn will take place between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m.
