Cal State Fullerton will honor the late Miles D. McCarthy, a biology professor, with a symposium today that will showcase the health professions program, founded by McCarthy in 1959.

University officials said the program has guided and helped hundreds of students gain admission to some of the nation’s leading schools in health-related fields.

Since the program was founded, 86% of the 1,230 students recommended by its Health Professions Committee have been admitted to the schools of their choice, officials said.

McCarthy, one of the university’s five founding faculty members, died last year at age 80.

Warren R. McKay, a Fullerton graduate who now is the associate clinical professor and co-director of pain service at Moffit Long Hospital at UC San Francisco, will be the featured speaker at the symposium.

The event, free and open to the public, will begin at 11 a.m. at the Portola Pavilion on campus.
