Officers From K-9 Unit File Suit in Dispute Over Wages

The Inglewood Police Assn. and 10 of its officers sued the city Tuesday, claiming that officers in the K-9 unit are owed overtime for taking care of police dogs at home.

The officers claim that the city of Inglewood owes each of them about 20 hours, 30 minutes of overtime per month for three years, plus interest, for “the feeding, exercising, grooming, training, caring [and] transportation” of the animals.

Inglewood Deputy City Atty. Jack Ballas, who said the city has not been served with the lawsuit, declined to comment. Inglewood City Manager Paul Eckles also was sued.

The eight-page Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit states the plaintiffs filed a claim with the city on April 27, and it was rejected 45 days later.

The plaintiffs also want a court order requiring the city to pay overtime for future care of the dogs.
