Much of the Sankei newspaper was blank Wednesday afternoon--and not by accident.
Space usually devoted to ads was left open, save for tiny print listing advertisers’ names. The newspaper left space usually devoted to advertisements blank in the hope that readers would think about the importance of ads.
Sankei, Japan’s fourth-largest daily, published the blank spots only in its slimmer afternoon edition. Advertisers picked up the cost.
