Kurdish Rivals Battle in North

Fighting between rival Kurdish factions in northern Iraq seesawed as Iraqi-backed guerrillas recaptured the strategic town of Kuysanjaq from their Iranian-sponsored enemies. Kuysanjaq straddles the highway leading to the north’s regional capital, Irbil, the city Iraqi-allied Kurds invaded in late August with help from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s army. The attack on the north, a U.S.-declared safe haven for the Kurds, sparked U.S. military strikes on Hussein’s forces near Baghdad.
