After Gary Gaetti hit his grand slam to beat the Braves in Game 2 of the National League championship series, he declared, “Hey, I wonder what the Angels are thinking now?”

Gaetti batted .274 with 23 homers and 80 runs batted in the past season. During Gaetti’s tenure with the Angels from 1991 through part of 1993 he batted .246, .226 and .180 for a composite .234 average and a three-year total of 30 home runs and 118 RBIs.

The Angels were probably wondering where Gaetti’s production was during those three years of mediocre baseball while he was making his millions in salary.

Congratulations to the networks in their coverage of the baseball playoffs. They actually cross-promoted each other’s coverage. ESPN told us when Fox’s game coverage would be on; Fox billboarded NBC’s coverage, and so on. Furthermore, commentators sent good wishes to their counterparts at the other networks. Good sportsmanship and consideration for the viewers won out over corporate greed.

Tim McCarver talks so much during a game I’m surprised he’s not a Dodger announcer.

What’s more important than the Yankees going to the World Series? Roberto Alomar isn’t!

News item: Yankees capture American League pennant after Roberto Alomar’s error leads to five unearned runs.

My reaction: Maybe there is a God after all (and he dispenses justice with a firmer hand than Bud Selig).

Alomar’s reaction: “Yeah, well, what did you expect? God has been pretty bitter since his son died 2,000 years ago.”
