Park Problems Are Solvable

Re “Surveillance With a Smile,” Sept. 18:

I applaud citizens taking action to make a difference in their neighborhood. I believe we need more concerned citizens with energy to bring about changes for the better. The elements presented and the general mood of this article, however, cause me to question the motives of the writer or the motives of the citizens’ group. After reading this article, one would have to assume that park patrons have not been able to enjoy the park because of the homosexual activity that occurs there. The reader would also assume that graffiti is also a problem. Other than those two problems, he would have to assume it is a lovely neighborhood park.

On the contrary, Santiago Park is a rundown park with many problems. The article says that the spouse of the citizens group leader was afraid to visit the park, and implies that this is because of the homosexual activity. I believe the homosexuals are the least of this woman’s worries. I am a gay man who lives near the park, and I too am afraid to go in the park.

The article fails to mention that there are also problems with homeless people, drug addicts, gangs, gay bashers, homophobic park rangers, facilities in disrepair, dark concealed areas, and inadequate lighting, to mention a few. In spite of these problems, it has the potential of being a beautiful park.

Add lighting, fix the facilities and the grounds, and more people will start coming to enjoy the park. All the problems, not just the lewd conduct, will be solved. Santiago Park should either be fixed up or closed down.
