Smit Rallies to Win Women’s Title

Maaike Smit rallied to win her first U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship, defeating Australia’s Daniela DiToro, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, Saturday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.

Third-seeded Smit, from the Netherlands, fell behind in the final set, 5-3, with fourth-seeded DiToro serving for match point before mounting a comeback.

In the men’s semifinals, David Hall of Costa Mesa lost the chance to defend his singles title when he lost to third-seeded Steve Welch, 6-3, 6-3. Welch, of Arlington, Texas, will face Ricky Molier (Netherlands) in today’s final at 11 a.m.

In doubles, Hall and Michael Foulks of La Jolla advanced to today’s final, where they will defend their title against Molier and Eric Stuurman (Netherlands) at about 2 p.m.

Foulks and Hall defeated Scott Douglas of Pelham, Ala., and Chip Parmelly of Diamond Bar, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4 in Saturday’s semifinals.
