Rival Kurdish forces engaged in fierce fighting for control of northern Iraq’s strategic Dukan Dam. Witnesses said forces of the Iranian-backed Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, or PUK, stalled an advance by their Baghdad-supported foes, the Democratic Party of Kurdistan, or KDP, which had pushed to within three miles of the dam. The KDP was attempting to take the dam in a push to recapture Sulaymaniyah, the PUK’s stronghold and the region’s biggest city.
