* Southern California Underground Contractors in Brea has been awarded a $966,264 contract to build a dirt channel and access roads to reduce flooding in the El Rio community north of Central Avenue. The work, commissioned by the Ventura County Public Works Agency, will begin at Central and Vineyard avenues and continue west to the Santa Clara River. Construction is expected to be completed by Jan. 16.

The work, expected to begin Oct. 29 and continue through January, consists of extending the culvert and repairing the road to restore and stabilize the embankment. The work will cause some traffic problems, including a detour and/or single-lane closure with flagging.
