Day Runner Inc.: The Irvine manufacturer of organizers and planners reported net income of $3.8 million, or 57 cents a share, for the first quarter of fiscal 1997, an increase of 19% from the $3.2 million, or 49 cents a share, for the same period last year. Sales for the quarter ended Sept. 30 were up 2% to $33.5 million from $32.8 million.
