Panel to Offer Advice on Risk Management

Share

Maneuvering a nonprofit group through the maze of insurance issues is a dicey proposition.

Although volunteers give their time out of benevolence, accidents do happen. Sometimes people have car accidents while volunteering. And on occasion, a board member might embezzle money from a charitable group or a volunteer might abuse a nonprofit organization’s clients.

“Nonprofits can end up closing their doors as a result of one lawsuit,” explained Betty Krause, administrator of Ventura Opportunity Center for Active Living (VOCAL). “That’s why risk management is something nonprofits need to look at.”

To assist nonprofits in protecting themselves and their assets, VOCAL and the Ventura County Human Resources Department will present a workshop, “Identifying Special Risk in Your Volunteer Program,” on Nov. 6.

A panel of three special risk insurance experts--ITT Hartford’s Richard Long and Peter Georgi and Roger Perry of Santa Barbara Insuring Agency--will discuss the most common type of insurance available to volunteer agencies.

This free workshop is designed to help volunteer coordinators, volunteers and board members of nonprofit groups develop a risk-management plan.

The program will take place from 8:30 to 11 a.m. in the board room of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. For information and reservations, call 654-3361 by Nov. 4.
