From Times staff and wire reports
In photo above, taken by the Galileo spacecraft Sept. 7, Jupiter’s red-hot moon Io blasts huge plumes of volcanic lava. Black and red areas indicate the most recent lava flows, probably just a few years old. The active volcano Prometheus is near the center right of the image. The most geologically active body in the solar system, Io’s pockmarked surface has changed dramatically since the Voyager fly-bys 17 years ago.
