CompuServe Wins Restraining Order Against E-Mail Firm: The Columbus, Ohio-based online service provider said a federal judge granted a temporary restraining order prohibiting Cyber Promotions Inc. from identifying its electronic mail as coming from CompuServe Inc. The order requires that Philadelphia-based Cyber Promotions eliminate the notation “compuserve.com” from the commercial e-mail it sends through CompuServe’s online service. The e-mail is unsolicited and CompuServe calls it junk mail. CompuServe sued Cyber Promotions in federal court in Columbus. CompuServe’s request for the restraining order didn’t request permission to block the e-mail, though the company’s goal is to stop unsolicited mail on its service, a company lawyer said. A December hearing is scheduled.
