CSUN Walk to Raise Funds for Heart Assn.

Share

Hundreds are expected to participate in the first 5K Healthy Choice American Heart Walk at Cal State Northridge on Sunday, hoping to raise at least $15,000 for the American Heart Assn.

Streets along the route will remain open while residents and CSUN students take part in the non-competitive walk. The walk begins at 8 a.m. in parking lot T, north of the campus on Lindley Avenue and Lassen Street.

Fred Strache, director of CSUN’s student health center, said the route will take the group completely around the campus.

“I think we’ll have an enjoyable time,” he said. “It’ll be a good old Sunday morning party.”

Participants may register for the walk until starting time. Each walker who raises at least $40 will receive a water bottle. Those who raise $75 will receive an event T-shirt.

Special red caps will be given to those walkers who have survived heart disease, heart surgery or stroke.

Response from students and the community has been good, Strache said, expressing hope that the walk will be held annually.

“It’s important that the students deal with these health issues,” Strache said. Money from the event will help fight heart disease and stroke.

The event is sponsored by ConAgra Inc., Kaiser Permanente, the Valley Edition of the Los Angeles Times and Great Western Bank.
