A Las Vegas businessman has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for dumping hazardous industrial waste in the Mojave Desert under cover of darkness.

Gene LeFave, president and owner of Fluid Polymers Inc., had previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Robert J. Timlin.

The company manufactured adhesives and rubber products. LeFave, his son, Louis, and two grandsons dumped 97 55-gallon barrels of waste rather than pay $1,000 per barrel to a licensed hazardous waste disposal company.

The dumping occurred during a five-month period in 1995.

Louis LeFave earlier was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison.
