Travelers who fear flying, or perhaps simply crave a leisurely train trip, might consider a new Panama Canal cruise, promoted as “Coast to Coast Without Flying.”

On Jan. 4, the 800-passenger Cunard Dynasty departs Los Angeles for Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., via the canal on a 15-day itinerary that includes stops in Acapulco; Cartagena, Colombia; and Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The fare includes Amtrak coach travel back to Los Angeles from Ft. Lauderdale, where the cruise ends.

Fares start at $2,090 per person, double occupancy, including port tax. Sleeping accommodations aboard the train are extra.

A luxurious, holiday variation on the same idea involves the Queen Elizabeth 2 and private cars attached to Amtrak’s Sunset Limited train. Passengers board the train at Union Station on Dec. 31 for Orlando, Fla., travel by bus from there to Ft. Lauderdale, cruise through the canal and return to Los Angeles on Jan. 17. Fares begin at $3,430.

Both cruises are offered by Uncommon Journeys. For reservations, see a travel agent or call (800) 323-5893.
