Civil Rights Lawyer to Discuss Militia Groups
- Share via
A civil rights attorney and founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center will speak on the radical militia movement in the United States as part of Soka University’s human rights lecture series.
Morris Dees will speak on “A Passion for Justice: The Radical Militia Movement and Related Organizations” from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Soka University at 26800 W. Mulholland Highway.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based organization that runs a program called Klanwatch, was instrumental in bankrupting the Ku Klux Klan in the 1980s with a series of lawsuits, including a precedent-setting, $7-million settlement for the family of an Ethiopian man murdered by skinheads in Oregon.
In his book “The Gathering Storm: America’s Militia Threat,” Dees wrote that militia groups are being infiltrated by white supremacists and “super-patriots.”
The lecture is free and open to the public, though seating is limited. For more information or reservations, call (818) 878-3780.
