From Times Staff and Wire Reports

General Motors and the United Auto Workers continued negotiating past a union-imposed midnight deadline with no immediate word on whether a strike would be called. Negotiators were still meeting behind closed doors at GM’s headquarters, said GM spokesman Ray Deibel. In the early evening, GM Chairman Jack Smith Jr. and UAW President Stephen Yokich joined the talks, a union spokesman confirmed. Talks were believed to be hung up on the union’s demand that GM follow the job-security pattern set by national contracts signed by Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp.
