GM-Union Talks Seek to Avert Strike

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Faced with a Sunday midnight deadline, General Motors Corp. and United Auto Workers negotiators worked to complete a new labor contract to avoid a strike against the world’s biggest auto maker. Talks in Detroit were believed to be hung up on the union’s demand that GM follow the job-security pattern set by national contracts signed by Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. The union said it would terminate its extended 1993 contract with GM if no deal was reached by the deadline. The UAW traditionally does not work without a contract, but it could opt to extend the contract beyond the deadline if negotiators are making progress.
