Dana Point Enjoys Record Bed Tax Revenue

Share

The city’s August bed tax receipts were the highest in history, according to a new report. The city got $566,000 from room sales in August, up 14% from the previous record, which was set in August 1995.

John Sherwood, the city’s economic development manager, said that compared to the first three months of last fiscal year, the city’s bed tax revenue is up nearly 23%, thanks in part to an improved economy.

“We’d like to think this strong hotel performance filters to our local businesses, who sell the goods and services that hotel guests need,” Sherwood said.

There are 13 hotels in Dana Point. Sherwood said that, in August, the city’s five largest hotels “each set individual revenue records and recorded occupancies ranging from 79 to 94%.”

The bed taxes help offset the cost of maintaining public facilities and services that hotel guests use. In Dana Point, the 10% charge assessed to guests on their hotel rooms amounts to more than 30% of the city’s $13-million annual budget.
