Huddle Break Will Be Tribute to Sanders

Share

As part of Saturday’s homecoming festivities in the Rose Bowl, UCLA will honor the 1946 Bruins, and Coach Bob Toledo will pay tribute to the late Red Sanders, who coached from 1949-57.

On the first offensive play, the Bruins will peel from the huddle and head to the line of scrimmage in serpentine fashion, as they did under Sanders.

“I talked to Sam Boghosian [who played for Sanders from 1952-54] and got some old film of how to do it,” Toledo said. “It’s my own tribute. It’s a huddle that became famous all over the country.”

Defensive end Travis Kirschke has a bruise on his left foot that hampers his mobility, and he is resting it during practice. A 3-week-old injury, it has not hampered him in games. . . . UCLA held a one-play live scrimmage between the first-team offense and defense, with the defense holding the offense in check and tailback Skip Hicks fumbling and drawing a chiding from Toledo.
