DWP Testing Prepaid Cards for Electricity

Share

Local DWP customers annoyed by improper billing, large security deposits and the usual two-month payment interval have a new option, thanks to a pilot program implemented in the Valley this fall.

The new metering system is a “pay-as-you-go” plan similar to prepaid phone cards. During a yearlong trial period, the DWP will install for free a small box in any residence.

Customers can use the box to monitor electricity use during 24-hour and/or 30-day intervals. The device will tell customers how much they owe for those periods.

To ensure continued power, the customer swipes a prepaid “PowerStat” card through the box. Cards for any amount are available at the DWP branch offices in Canoga Park and Van Nuys.

The system “gives customers more control,” said Odell Mathieu, a DWP customer service manager.

If the trial in the Valley is successful, DWP officials say the system will be offered citywide.

“People who have had power shut off or made complaints over billing will be particularly interested in this,” said DWP spokeswoman Karen Shepard-Grimes.

The metering system is used successfully throughout eastern Europe, Shepard-Grimes said.
