Marcel Carne; Director of ‘Les Enfants du Paradis’

Marcel Carne, 90, well-known French film director who produced the classic “The Children of Paradise.” Carne, whose style became known as “poetic realism,” teamed up with Jacques Prevert to shoot two of his greatest films during the Nazi occupation of France in World War II. To indirectly denounce the occupation, Carne set “Les Visiteurs du Soir (Night Visitors),” in a medieval story. The second, “Les Enfants du Paradis (The Children of Paradise),” depicted a theater troupe. Born in Paris, Carne studied photography and cinema and began his career as a journalist. He broke into films as an associate director and in 1938 shot his first major success, “Hotel du Nord.” On Thursday in Paris.
