Bill Mallory, who briefly lifted Indiana from the depths of Big Ten football mediocrity, was fired Thursday, midway through his 13th season.

The Hoosiers, who had only five winning seasons in almost 40 years before Mallory arrived, went to six bowl games under his leadership and raised the hopes of their long-suffering fans.

Since 1994, however, Indiana has won only four games and currently has a 13-game losing streak in the Big Ten.

Mallory will remain through the end of the season. A search already has begun for his replacement, Athletic Director Clarence Doninger said.

Texas declared Mike Adams, Bryant Westbrook, Tre Thomas and Chris Carter ineligible after learning that an agent had paid for their lunch during a weekend meeting.

Texas officials had concluded that the players had done nothing wrong when they met with agent Mike George at a lunch arranged by former Longhorn linebacker Winfred Tubbs, now with the New Orleans Saints.

But school officials received records from the hotel where the meeting took place indicating that, while Tubbs signed for the meal to be charged to his hotel room, George paid for Tubbs’ room, said John Bianco, Texas’ assistant sports information director.

Bianco said the school would file the new findings with the NCAA in hopes the players might be reinstated before Saturday’s Big 12 Conference game against Baylor.

A Fordham University player who collapsed Oct. 12 during pregame warmups died of a fatal infection of his heart lining, the medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy determined that the infection, called viral myocarditis, caused the death of Bill Tierney, a 20-year-old junior defensive back from Lyndhurst, N.J.
